A postcard from Hana Ranch with the following message was delivered to Hana mailboxes on Dec. 1, 2005:

Hana Ranch Partners, L.L.C. and Oprah Winfrey have decided to terminate further discussions with regard to Ms. Winfrey's purchase of the Ranch lands at Mokae and in the Hamoa/Haneo'o area. The parties were unable to reach final agreement on some of the business terms of the proposed transaction. The Ranch and Ms. Winfrey will continue to work together in areas of mutual interest.

Affordable housing in Hana continues to be a priority for Hana Ranch. We look forward to working with the community to move this project forward in 2006.

in order to promote good will among HANA RESIDENTS & HANA RANCH PARTNERS - 60% Owned by the Ronald Getty Trust, invite Judge Newsom, Trustee for the Ronald Getty Trust and all the HANA RANCH PARTNERS to follow through with their promise to the Hana Community and involve us in discussions about the future of the ranch lands.

The following is an article from the Maui News- January 12, 2001

Judge Newsom and Dan Omer in the Maui News article said they are very aware that previous ranch owners have made many promises and ended up disappointing the Hana community. "The difference this time is in who is making the promises," Newsom said, noting the hui's ties to Hana and the conservation backgrounds of many of the buyers. "We fully recognize the need to include the community as the ranch lands future is decided. It's an indispensable part of the plan" - Judge Newsom, Trustee for the Ronald Getty Trust

"The new buyers said they will complete an assessment of sensitive areas with community input and put together a master development plan" - quote from Maui News January 12, 2001

It has been almost 5 years since the sale and this promise. The community has not once been contacted to discuss the "Master Development Plan".

We suggest the following as a gesture of good faith:

STOP all land sales until such time as the community can participate in the planning for Hana's future.

MEET with the Hana community to share plans & ideas resulting in the greatest benefit for all parties.

RESPOND to the community's request for consideration in purchasing the land.

The Hana Community Poll results as presented to the HANA RANCH PARTNERS clearly reflect the community's wishes:

  • 82% would prefer to preserve all ranch lands as conservation.
  • 93% asked that the HANA RANCH PARTNERS work actively with the Hana Community to develop a long-term plan for the community before any more ranch land is sold or developed.
  • Only 3% would want to see ocean side development if development were inevitable. The majority would prefer no development or mauka development at all.

It is clear to the Hana residents that RE-SUBDIVIDING, SALE, OR DEVELOPMENT, of land at MOKAE, HAMOA will OBLITERATE one of the most precious, and sensitive areas containing ancient burials and culturally significant sites in all of Hawaii nei.

WE INVITE THE PUBLIC TO JOIN US TO KEEP HANA, HANA AND TO MAKE A STAND - THAT THIS CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT AREA AND PRISTINE COASTLINE WILL NOT BE DESTROYED FOR PURE PROFIT FOR A FEW TO THE DETRIMENT OF THE HAWAIIAN CULTURE, THE PEOPLE OF HANA AND ITS MILLIONS OF VISITORS.
